Is Social Media Necessary for Student-Athletes?

Social media seems like an evil necessary in today’s world.

What a great question to dive into with our specialists at Path Fore Success.

Social media seems like an evil necessary in today’s world. Apps like Facebook, Twitter (or X), Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat have consumed everyday life – and this is no exception in the college recruiting scene.

Let us start off by saying…

If you decide to have social media accounts – post like your grandparents can see every single story and picture you upload.

As a former college coach – when we received an email from a prospective student athlete – one of the first items on my checklist was to head straight to their social media accounts. You can find out a lot about abperson through their pictures and posts or videos. The college coaches ultimate goal is to make sure you are the right fit for his or her team. This is where things get a little confusing!

A negative social media account can absolutely ruin your chances at being recruited. I can’t tell you how many times I dove into an Instagram or Facebook account and saw things that deterred me from continuing the recruiting process. Now this doesn’t mean a few negative posts or pictures will end your chances at being recruited – but you just need to be aware that anything you post will eventually be found.

Over the years I’ve seen a lot of student athletes create golf specific accounts on Instagram and Facebook – this is helpful to a college coach in seeing swing videos, short game, and to get to know you better – especially during the hectic time of a pandemic. Any information you can provide to make the life of a college coach easier is always welcomed.

I highly suggest making a golf specific social media presence. You might also want to go follow specific university golf pages and coaches so that you can get on their feed. If you aren’t comfortable running a personal account and golf account, that’s okay! Social media definitely isn’t necessary to get recruited – just make sure if you do choose to use it – it is free of anything that may shed a negative light on you.

We hope that you were able to learn something about the social media and if you need it or not. For more posts like this one, check out our blog here: Path Fore Success Blog. You can also follow us on Instagram & Twitter for more!
