A college recruiting resume is very important for every aspiring college athlete. It is a vital piece of information that will be used to contact college coaches in hopes of playing at the collegiate level. If you don’t have a college recruiting resume yet or yours needs a bit of a refresh, this post is for you! Follow along with our TOP tips from a former DI college coach & two former DI college athletes.
College Recruiting Resume Introduction
The introduction is the first thing a coach sees when they open your email. It is important to take extra time to write a good but concise introduction of yourself. This could be the difference between a coach responding to your email or ignoring it.
Here are some more tips to consider when writing your introduction.
- Address the resume to the coach receiving it. Coaches prefer personalized emails as opposed to a generic one
- Start off the introduction with: Dear (Coach’s Last Name)
- In this section, you will also want to include some basic information
- Name and Graduation Year
- If you have a highlight video or any video showcasing your golf abilities, this is the best place to put a link to that video
- Link to highlight video: (place video link here)
Contact Information
It is very important to be up front with the contact information you are providing college coaches. If you are already emailing them, they will have your email address but it doesn’t hurt to add it into the email as well. We always suggest having a section on your college recruiting resume just for contact information – coaches are busy and don’t want to hunt this down.
This section should include:
- Cell Phone Number
- Email Address
- Parents/Guardians Names
- High School Information
- Coaches Name, Email Address & Phone Number
Academic Information
Your academic information is crucial for a coach to know whether or not you have what it takes to be a student-athlete in college.
- Eligibility Center Number
- Cumulative GPA
- High School Name & Phone Number
- SAT/ACT Scores
- Desired Major(optional)
- List of Any Honors or AP Classes
Athletic Information – Sport Specific
Aside from your academic eligibility, your athletic success is what really stands out most to college coaches. This portion of your resume is a time for you to brag on yourself. Coaches need to see scores and they also love to see tournament results. A coach will be more willing to come see you compete in person if all of this information is provided.
- NCAA ID
- Scoring Average
- List of Club Distances
- List of Results from Most Recent Tournaments
Now that you have the content of your college recruiting resume, there are two other things you will want to consider. How you should format your resume and where do you send your resume.
Formatting Your Resume
When formatting your college recruiting resume, we suggest keeping it as clean and straight forward as possible. The urge to ”fluff up” your resume is always there, but this information should only be facts. We would also suggest that you label all the information we provided you above in compact sections. The biggest takeaway is to make the coaches life easier in finding whatever information interests them.
College Coach Contact Information
The NCAA and the NAIA colleges have made it pretty easy to find their contact information online. Although this is not always true, some college coaches do not have their info public. Now back to finding the contact information, start with a google search. Type this into google (University Name Women’s/Mens Golf Coach) and you should find the school’s athletic website.
