Talking to college coaches can be daunting but it is a vital step if you want to secure a golf scholarship. Our team has been fortunate enough to have been on both sides of the aisle during these conversations so we put together a few things that should assist you on how to communicate with college coaches.

There are four different ways to communicate legally with a college coach – through email, social media, on the phone and in person. If you are unsure about when you and a college coach can talk, check out our Ultimate Recruiting Guidelines for D1 Prospects or send us an email at info@pathforesuccess.com

EMAIL

Email is the one of the most popular forms of communication between coaches and prospective student-athletes. Finding email addresses for the coaching staff is a pretty simple process and sending them an email with your quick highlights and why you like their school works best.

Tips

  • Email Subject Line : (Player Name, Grad Year)
  • Always address the Coach by name, never start an email with “Coach” only
    • Ex. Coach Smith or Coach Dice
  • Be specific about who you are, where you attend school, graduation years, and recent results. This information is crucial to college coaches and can really cut down the amount of time they spend searching for your infomation. The easier the format – the better!
  • Send follow-up emails
    • Coaches receive a lot of emails during the year and sometimes your email can get lost – make sure to check back in with them every so often and update them on your schedule and recent successes.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Communicating through social media accounts is definitely on the rise, especially if a golfer and/or coach is active on their social accounts. Don’t be alarmed if coaches aren’t liking your Instagram posts or viewing your stories – social media isn’t for everyone!

Tips

  • Make golf related social media accounts – like and comment on team pages that you like!
  • Try to keep the messages short and to the point
    • If you need to send something longer or with more detail, we would suggest writing an email or state that you have also sent the coach an email
  • Do not rely just on social media messages

PHONE

This section covers both making phone calls and corresponding through text messages. Getting a college coach on the phone is a big deal – so if this happens – make sure you are prepared! Texting with coaches is a very common and relaxed way to communicate with coaches on various topics.

Tips

  • Always address the coach properly (by last name)
  • Be prepared with a list of questions – getting a coach on the phone is very crucial and a great time to ask some important items
  • Always thank the coach for their time – even if you only get them for a few minutes – they are bombarded every day with recruits vying for their attention!
  • Be aware that they will most likely have some questions for you too! Answer honestly!

IN PERSON

Talking to a coach in person is probably the most daunting for a junior golfer but is something that will definitely help your stock rise in their eyes IF you are prepared! Getting to talk to coaches in person really helps build relationships quickly.

Tips

  • Treat coaches with respect – first impressions are huge
  • Always address the coach properly (by last name)
  • Be prepared to answer any questions the coach may ask – you may be put on the spot!
  • Send a follow-up email to thank them for their time
    • See above for tips on emails
