The first two years of high school are pivotal in the success of a student-athletes dreams of competing at the collegiate level. These two years are when college coaches really take a notice to you, your scores, and overall ability on the golf course.
This can be a stressful time for a student-athlete because of the lack of communication allowed by the NCAA between coaches and the player.
Here are some of the important recruiting guidelines for student-athletes who are a freshman or sophomore.
Recruiting Guidelines for Sophomores & Freshmen
- Telephone calls and texts: A college coach cannot accept a call, text you or return a voicemail prior to June 15 following your sophomore year of high school. This doesnât mean you canât contact the coach – it always helps to be proactive and get your name on their radar as soon as possible!
- Off-campus contact: No off campus contact is allowed per the NCAA.
- Unofficial visit: You ARE allowed to take an unlimited amounts of unofficial visits on your own time. We highly suggest taking advantage of any down time by visiting colleges that you have an interest in to see if the vibe of campus life fits what you are looking for. You can also visit the universityâs home course and take a look – as long as you donât communicate with the coaches.
- Official visit: No official visits are permitted during these two years.
Although communication is not allowed between coaches and student-athletes during the first two years of high school – we highly suggest being proactive and keeping the coaches updated with your schedule, results, and any other important information so they can keep your name on their radar. You canât expect college coaches to knock your door down when June 15th after your sophomore year is complete. There are thousands of golfers who have similar goals as you!
